Machine Learning Algorithms for Detection of Phishing Websites

Abstract: Phishing is the fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information or data, such as usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, or other sensitive details, by impersonating as a trustworthy entity. Phishing is lucrative because it is a low-cost job for the attackers, it is difficult to find and prosecute them, and numerous phishing toolkits to design phishing websites are freely available online. In this talk, we will analyse several methods for detecting phishing websites. In the first part, we will discuss PhishZip, a novel phishing detection approach using a compression algorithm to perform website classification. In the second part, we will describe another tool called PhishSim, which is a feature-free system for detection of phishing websites. This is a joint work with my academic collaborators from UNSW Sydney.

Biography: Arindam Pal is a Senior Research Scientist at Data61 in Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), and a Senior Research Fellow at Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre (CSCRC). He is also a Conjoint Senior Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW Sydney. His research interests are in Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security and Machine Learning. He works on business and research problems of CSIRO, and collaborates with faculty members of universities, both in Australia and abroad. He earned his PhD in Computer Science from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He has over 13 years of industrial research experience in software companies like Microsoft, Yahoo!, and Novell. He has published academic papers in reputed conferences and journals, and filed patents in various countries like India, USA, and Europe. He is a technical program member for several reputed conferences and technical reviewer for many renowned journals. He is a Senior Member of both ACM and IEEE.
