Abstract: The growing demand for real-time data processing, privacy preservation, and simplified application development and deployment across cloud, edge, and the edge-to-cloud continuum has brought sustainability and efficiency to the forefront of our focus. This emphasis is particularly crucial in domains like the Internet of Things (IoT), Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), Video Analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Edge Intelligence. In this seminar, my objective is to explore how cloud and edge computing, as well as the edge-to-cloud continuum, can become more environmentally friendly through the development of optimized algorithms and software to enhance energy efficiency in these systems. Additionally, I will delve into our advancements in serverless edge computing architecture, streamlining application deployment, and scalability to reduce operational costs and enhance overall efficiency. Throughout the discussion, I will highlight projects developed within the DisNet lab at Monash University, which significantly reduce the operational costs and greenhouse gas emissions of power-hungry cloud data centres and edge nodes. These achievements are made possible through innovative resource scheduling and management algorithms, with a particular focus on our work towards serverless edge computing. One of the showcased projects includes a prototype of power-efficient edge nodes integrated with a renewable energy system.
