Abstract: Large language models, such as ChatGPT and OpenAI Codex, have recently emerged as very powerful generative AI models. They have demonstrated capability to solve introductory programming problems with high degree of success, which poses significant challenges for the CS Education community. But such models also provide opportunities to improve teaching and learning. I discuss recent work applying generative AI models to computing education, and argue that our rapidly shifting educational environment highlights the importance of scholarship of teaching and learning for our success as teachers, while simultaneously offering avenues for research.

Biography: Professor Andrew Luxton-Reilly began teaching in the School of Computer Science at the University of Auckland in 1995. He is an advocate for scholarship of teaching and learning within the School of Computer Science, and more widely for the Faculty of Science as the Associate Dean Teaching and Learning. His research interests are in Computing Education, focusing on how to support students who are learning to program, and more specifically, peer learning, automated assessment tools, programming style, and introductory programming.
